A series of 6 videos with accompanying student workbook and teachers handbook aimed at 1st and 2nd year Junior Cert Music students. The material uses conducting to engage students with the ingredients of music, building listening and observation skills, as well as developing creative improvisation and vocalisation skills.

The materials have been developed by Irish conductor Sinead Hayes, with the support of the Arts Council of Ireland.

Chamber Music Skills – A concise guide for teachers

Zoom Conducting: Reframing the Baton

The move to online ensembles taught us much about how our students learn and assimilate music. In this short publication I propose a framework for musical skill development, tested during my online work with the young musicians of Athenry Music School Sinfonietta.

The core ideas of Critical Listening, Critical Observation and Critical Musical Thinking can be successfully transferred to the live rehearsal situation, equipping students with skills that will enable them to continue to grow into questioning, creative musicians.
